U of Hawaii at Manoa

Deanna Gradwell

Hometown: Newport News, VA

Major: Animal Science

Why I Choose My College: To be honest is picked UH because i had been living in Hawaii with my parents, who are military and I could pay in state tuition. Money is tight in college especially in Hawaii

Curriculum: The curriculum is pretty straight forward. If you go to the New Student Orientations then you will be told what is required for your particular major and where you have room to wiggle. The most annoying thing is that the college has a lot of requirements that every student has to take. Most of which have nothing to do with what you really want, but there is no choice. Of course all colleges will have this, and there is no way to know just how much there will be till you get there or talk to a person from that particular school.

Students: Everyone is pretty laid back here, but you can find any type of clique if you look for them. There are a zillion clubs, so you can find people who share your interests pretty easily.

Classes: The classes are interesting as long as you know what it is you are doing/ want out of college. There are a lot of different classes to choose from. There is a pretty big BUSINESS  program. So if that is what you want then the school could be pretty cool. But I am not in it so you should look into that. Science classes are pretty basic, but don’t come for CHEMISTRY or MATH. All of the chem and math professors suck. Not a good one in the mix, I swear.

Favorite Part?: Probably the weather, and the environment/surroundings. The weather here is, of course, wonderful. And there is always a beach option if you want to go somewhere fun for free. (Bus Pass included in student Fees)

Least Favorite Part: It is really expensive to live here/ shop here. Since everything is basically imported everything is expensive. And if you don’t want to live on campus then don’t come here. the cost of living is higher than the average salary. plus gas i A LOT more expensive here than on the mainland.

Random Stuff: Greek life is not something to come for. they do have the greek sororities/ fraternities, but there is no greek row or anything. they don’t have houses that they live in, to my knowledge anyways.

food is decent. but if you aren’t up for trying out some new cuisine then i wouldn’t consider it. most of the food is from all over the place. as a long time east coast liver, the food gets pretty different.

If you have money, then there are tons of thing to do around hawaii, but if you are lacking, and have no job experience (which makes it extremely difficult to get a job here) then basically you have the beach and the on campus surrounding/friends houses if you make friends with locals. not a lot to do for cheap/free

Fashion Institute of Technology

Tumblr: daniellaxoxo.tumblr.com

Hometown: Long Island
Location of college: Manhattan, NYC
Year: Sophomore
Major: Associates:Fashion Merchandising Management, Bachelors: International Trade and Marketing for the fashion industry
Why did you choose the college: I’ve always known I wanted to go into Fashion Business and FIT has always been my dream school. It’s one of the most respected schools in the industry and the opportunities thrown at you everyday here are amazing which is why I chose FIT.
Describe the curriculum: Every teacher that works at the school is required to have ten years minimum experience in the industry so all of the faculty have amazing connections because many of them still do work in the industry while teaching. Majoring in Fashion Merchandising Management does require a lot of work. I love the classes because you take core business classes but the curriculum is applied to the fashion industry. You also take courses on textiles, and some intro courses that teach you about how the industry works. FIT’s course guide requires students to take at least 18 credits a semester the first two years which can be a little overwhelming but it is well worth it. What I recommend is taking a winter or summer course online (which only last about three weeks) to cut down your normal course load. FIT also offers an internship to be taken for credit as your elective class each semester. You can interview for internships in the areas you hope to work in for probably any company you could dream of interning for because FIt has an internship database and partnership with all these companies just for students. You also take your standard SUNY general education requirement classes which are one course in math, science, english and etc.
Describe the students: The students here are all very friendly and very into their majors. People can be very competitive when it comes to interning but that’s just normal for the Fashion Industry. Students here really express themselves in what they wear and it’s nice to meet people outside your major and learn about different aspects of the fashion Industry. I’m a business major but I have friends in design and Advertising and I love seeing the work that they do.
Describe the activities offered: I already explained the countless number of interning opportunities this school gives. Theres also a large number of clubs on campus that meet each week. During Mercedes Benz fashion week every
What is your least favorite part? My least favorite thing about the school were the dorms. I commute because I live on Long Island. I can say that sharing a small dorm and tiny kitchen and bathroom with three other girls was tough because I did try out living at the school. I’m used to living in my own home and forming just wasn’t for me so this is just my personal opinion. I realized I’d rather commute and save my money up for an apartment in NYC when I graduate. Then again it is NYC and building space is extremely expensive, especially in the garment district on 7th Ave. where the school is located so you can’t expect luxurious dorms.
What was a memorable moment? I’ll never forget my first day of classes hearing the experience my teachers had and knowing I was a student at FIT because I worked really hard to get accepted.
What is the surrounding area like? Simply AMAZING. I love everything about New York City. The school and dorms are located right on 7th ave. about six blocks from penn station which is very convenient. There is also a subway stop to go downtown or uptown right on campus. You have Times square about a ten-fifteen minute walk away and even going to Central Park or Fifth Avenue isn’t hard at all because of the subway. It’s NYC so theres a countless number of things to do. The empire state building is also a breathtaking view at night which you can see from some of the dorm windows or on 8th Ave. next to the campus at night.
Describe the food: The school food is ehhh, not that great to be honest. I stick with Starbucks on campus and the vending machines. It’s NYC though so you can easily get food off campus pretty much anywhere. There is a brand new Panera which is opening literally next to campus. Theres also a five guys, dunkin donuts, mcdonalds, starbucks, deli’s, pizzeria, and a japanese restaurant all next to campus so I personally recommend keeping your meal money separate instead of putting it on a swipe card so you have the freedom to eat wherever.
Notable Alumni: Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Nina Garcia, Carolina Hererra, Brian Atwood, Susan Bauer, Ken Downing, Norma Kamali, Ralph Rucci, Nanette Lepore, Joy Herfel, Randy Fenoli

There’s only one…SUNY New Paltz

Hi, my name is Madison (http://missmadsx3.tumblr.com/) and I am a sophomore at SUNY New Paltz (about 2 hours north of NYC).
I am from mid/upstate NY, a small town call Athens. My major at New Paltz is Early Childhood and Elementary Education with a concentration in English. Freshman year I was a member of the Emerging Leaders program, offered specifically for freshman, and now I am the vice president of Autism Speaks U, a new club that one my my close friends founded (the New Paltz Chapter). I also teach swim lessons on campus and am thinking about joining the team next year.
I chose SUNY New Paltz mainly because of the atmosphere. I visited it my junior year of HS and fell in love. It was a gorgeous day out and everyone was outside, playing frisbee or just enjoying the weather. So many students made a point to say hello and wave to my tour guide, as well as all of us on the tour. The campus was not too large, and didn’t seem confusing. New Paltz offered my major, as well as a variety of classes and it was only an hour away from my home (very important to me). It also was not too large in number, but wasn’t too small either. (6,000 undergrads)
The curriculum at NP is great. NP offers a wide variety of classes and is known for being a liberal arts school. I have taken a variety of classes as far as General Education Requirements and now am in all my major classes. I haven’t had any trouble registering for classes, maybe because I declared my major before starting school, but I do know others who have gotten closed out of certain classes. Some majors are very competitive.
The students at NP are great. We are a very diverse school, and everything is acceptable. Sports are not a big part - we have no football team and there are a lack of jocks. But it really depends on who you surround yourself with. NP is known for being a music/art/theatre school, so you will find many artsy students, and others who just walk around campus playing their instruments. Again, the atmosphere is great.
There are a wide variety of activities offered, more than I can name I’m sure. There is a club for almost everything..and if there’s not, you can start one!
Social scene…mainly happens off campus. The town of New Paltz is less than a 10 minute walk from campus and has pizza on pizza on pizza, a wide variety of bars where students spend weekends and other restaurants, as well as the cutest little shops. The town of New Paltz is always filled with students, music and a good time. Also, there are apartment complexes off campus which feature lots of parties as well. I am not personally a member, but there is also a greek life chapter at NP which is offered if you are interested.
Classes…ratemyprofessor.com, live by it. No matter what school you end up at. NP, just like any other school, has its its pros and cons. Registering for classes is really stressful, as I said before, especially if you are in a competitive major. I’ve been very fortunate though. If you get closed out of a class though, you can e-mail a professor and many will override and let you in the class. Most classes are about 1 hour 15 minutes, twice a week. My core education classes are now almost 3 hours long, once a week. Art classes are also longer. Classes are mainly scheduled Mon/Thurs and Tues/Fri, which leaves Wednesday off. Tuesday becomes a big party night for those with Wednesday off. When you get into higher credit courses though, Wednesday classes become necessary.
Favorite part…i love almost everything about new paltz. From the location to the people and the vibes of just being a part of such an amazing experience; college itself.
Least favorite part…hm. I don’t dislike much. The food selection could be better and we could use another dining hall, but it could definitely be worse, so I’m not going to complain.
I don’t know if I have a most memorable moment…but i have made so many friends, people that are so similar to me and that I will maintain friendships with throughout my life, and for me..that is enough.
Surrounding areas: I already talked about the town, its a cute little hippie town, as most people refer to it. Its the perfect college town - bars, pizza places, all different kinds of other restaurants, clothing and jewelry shops, coffee shops, music/record stores, etc. NP also has beautiful mountain views and Mohonk is a place that people like to go for lunch/to hike on a nice day in the Spring or Fall. The Rail Trail is also outside of town for running, walking or biking.
Facilities: The gym is great. It’s not huge, like I said this is not an athletic school. The gym is pretty new though, and I love it. The front and back curves feature treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, arcs, etc. There are weights, all the machines to work every muscle in your body, as well as mats for stretching. Basketball and volleyball games are held in the new gym. There is a beautiful pool downstairs and an indoor track upstairs. The gym also has racket ball courts and you can rent equipment from the front desk. Also, personal training sessions can be scheduled for free.  There are also weekly classes like yoga, cycling, zumba, etc.
NP has two on campus theaters - parker and mckenna. They feature shows student run and faculty produced and are very popular. Parker also has a cafe inside. Mckenna is attached to the Dorsky Museum which features student art. The library (Sojourner Truth Library, aka STL) is three floors (main floor, semi-quiet and all quiet floors) and extremely popular. The library is the first of four buildings (STL, two buildings that classes are in and the faculty tower) that are connected by indoor tunnels, to help make the walk easier in the rain/snow. This was a HUGE part of my liking for the campus, as I hate any form of precipitation.
Dorms: There are four unofficial sections of dorms at NP. Both years at NP I have lived in the Hasbrouck Complex (10 minute walk to classes). This is a section of 5 buildings (all identical, except the new and improved Crispell), which are all suite style. I live in a 3 bedroom (6 girls) suite where we share a common room and bathroom. I love it. I enjoy the suite style because you have your own bathroom and a private living room. There is also a study lounge on the main floor and a kitchen/lounge and computer lab in the basement of these buildings. Laundry is in the basement as well. This complex surrounds Hasbrouck Dining Hall. The freshman meal plan is only and all Hasbrouck, so last year it was very convenient. It is also convenient this year because Hawk Street Station (aka oscars) is open for dinner at 7 pm and is in the same building as hasbrouck. Dining dollars are used here, and that is what an upperclassman meal plan consists of.
Second..Parker Complex (5 minute walk to classes). If you are looking for doubles, this is the place to be. Parker has 4 buildings of all doubles. The rooms are significantly bigger than that in the Hasbrouck Complex, but this is because there is no common room. There are study lounges on every floor, and communal boys and girls bathrooms. Lounges/kitchen and laundry are also on the basement level. Gage is in the Parker Complex and is right next to the gym, and you will find many athletes live there.
Third is Lenepe and Esopus (15 minute walk to classes). Esopus is all freshman, you must sign up for the First Year Initiative Program, and you will be in a large double room. I’m not 100% sure too much about the program expect that there are 2 mandatory day trips. Lenepe features designed triples. The rooms are big with high ceilings because two people will have lofted beds, possibly all three. Most of the rooms are just the bedroom and a bathroom, but a select few on each floor include three rooms plus a bathroom. One room is for the beds, one is for the desks and one is a common area where the dressers are placed. The rooms are smaller than the other lenape style rooms. Lenape is located closer to the gym than the hasbrouck complex and near the athletic fields.
Last are College Hall and Shango…also known as Collango (because they are connected). Collango is only two floors, where all the other dorms are 4 floors. College Hall is half dorms and half class rooms, where the music classes are held. Many music majors live there because it is conveniently located with their classes. Both Shango and College are double style rooms. (5 minute walk to classes), located right in front of the quad.
Food…hasbrouck is the freshman meal plan. You can eat anytime you want, as many times as you want. Buffet style, includes dessert counter and ice cream. Hamburgers/hot dogs/fries every day. Pizza is also served every day. Salad bar and lunch meat/sandwich station. The grill has a different meal for dinner everyday, as well as the dinner station. Pasta is also served every day. There is a good selection of food, but of course, too much of anything gets old. Tuesdays are taco tuesdays and Thursdays always seem to have the best dinners.
After freshman year things look up…oscars serves sandwiches, soups and pizzas (only on weekdays), and pastas, paninis, burgers/fries (express food), and an entree every day. There are microwavable meals and chips and snacks sold also as well and drinks. Oscars is charged from your dining dollars. The SUB (Student Union Building) has a lot of options. A subway style sandwich place, a sushi bar, mexican, pasta/soups/salads, express, coffee/cafe and a smoothie place. These are all also from your dining dollars. Meal plans sophomore-senior year are your choice…either 5 hasbrouck swipes a week and an allotted number of dining dollars, or 14 hasbrouck swipes a week and less dining dollars.  Parker theatre has a cafe with sandwiches, soups and a salad bar. Jazzman’s cafe (located in the library and the faculty tower) is your typical cafe with premade salads, soups and drinks. Cookies, brownies, etc.
Nearby… i already described town. Other than that..NP is 2 hours north of NCY. The train station is 30 minutes away in Poughkeepsie. Kingston is 20 minutes north and Newburgh is 20 minutes south..both with malls.
Notable Alumni…honestly, I have no idea!
Greek Life. I’m not the person to ask, as I am not involved, but I know people who are. It isn’t a huge scene at NP, but it’s definitely there and if you are interested I’d say give it a shot.

To describe myself…I am a 20 year old, fun, go-with-the-flow student at NP. I have embraced my college experience to the fullest (which you should do, at any school you attend) and just fell in love with it. I’ve made some of the best friends, taken too many classes and too many jobs in one semester, and pulled too many all nighters. I stress to the fullest, but have fun doing it and LOVE my classes. I know what I want to do with my life, so school is just a step in that process, and for that I am truly blessed. I’d HIGHLY recommend SUNY New Paltz to any and everyone. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me! :)
